Legendary miler Jim Ryun's in town this week, too, and after a Wednesday press conference, he met up with athlete manager and publicist Barbara Huebner, who reported to us:
When Ryan Hall crosses the finish line on Sunday, he will have another special Ryun cheering for him in the bleachers – Jim Ryun, one of the greatest American milers in history. The long and the short of it is this: when Hall was a sophomore in high school, he attended Ryun’s running camp and the miler Ryun has been keeping a keen eye on the marathoner Ryan ever since. “We’ve watched Ryan change from a miler to a marathoner. He’s had a spectacular run and we’re just looking forward to being here and celebrating with him,” said the 62-year-old icon, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1996 to 2007 and still lives in Washington, DC, to be near his 10–yes, 10–grandchildren. “We’ve seen him develop from a 4:20 miler, and it’s just been remarkable.” Asked if he has offered his former camper any marathon tips, he laughed. “Ryan is beyond whatever I can help him with. He’s in another realm.”
